Pilea depressa ‘Creeping Charlie’ is a delicate yet resilient creeping plant with tiny, round, scalloped leaves that form a lush, dense mat of foliage. This fast-growing, trailing plant is ideal for bioactive enclosures, where it helps with humidity retention, ground cover, and aesthetic appeal. Its vigorous growth makes it an excellent choice for terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums, providing a soft, natural carpet for small reptiles and amphibians to explore.

Care Instructions

LIGHT. Prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate moderate to low light conditions. In bioactive setups, position it near a light source, but avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate foliage.

SOIL. Thrives in a moist, well-draining, organic-rich soil mix. A blend of coconut coir, sphagnum moss, and perlite creates the ideal environment for root health and aeration. In bioactive enclosures, this substrate also supports beneficial decomposers like isopods and springtails.

WATERING. Requires consistent moisture but should never be sitting in water. Allow the top half-inch of soil to dry slightly before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf curling and drying.

HUMIDITY. Thrives in high humidity levels (above 60%), making it perfect for bioactive enclosures. If humidity is too low, the leaves may dry out and become crispy. Regular misting or the presence of a water dish can help maintain optimal humidity.

TEMPERATURE. Prefers warm conditions between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Avoid exposure to cold drafts or temperatures below 55°F (13°C), as cold stress may lead to leaf drop and slowed growth.

FERTILIZATION. Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). In bioactive setups, organic fertilizers like Mealworm Frass provide slow-release nutrients, promoting lush, vibrant growth. Reduce feeding in winter, when growth slows.

Cohabitation with Bioactive Organisms

ISOPODS. These beneficial decomposers help aerate the soil, break down organic matter, and prevent compaction, creating an ideal growing environment for Pilea depressa.

SPRINGTAILS. Essential for mold prevention, springtails thrive in moist, organic-rich soil, ensuring a balanced ecosystem and keeping fungal issues at bay.

Soil and Maintenance Tips

SUBSTRATE. A light, airy mix of coconut coir, sphagnum moss, and perlite ensures good drainage and moisture retention. A thin layer of activated charcoal at the base helps with filtration and odor control in bioactive setups.

HUMIDITY CONTROL. Regular misting or using a humid substrate ensures the plant remains hydrated and thriving. Springtails and isopods help regulate excess moisture and prevent fungal issues.

TRIMMING. Frequent pruning encourages bushier growth and prevents the plant from becoming too leggy. Cuttings are easily propagated in water or soil, making it simple to expand your collection or replenish areas in your bioactive setup.

PEST CONTROL. Naturally resistant to most pests, but may occasionally attract aphids or spider mites in low-humidity conditions. The presence of isopods and springtails helps control pest populations naturally, ensuring a healthy plant.

With its trailing growth, tiny scalloped leaves, and ease of care, Pilea depressa ‘Creeping Charlie’ is an excellent choice for bioactive terrariums. It thrives in high humidity, creates a lush ground cover, and supports a balanced, nutrient-rich micro-ecosystem alongside isopods and springtails. By maintaining proper light, moisture, and substrate, you’ll ensure healthy, vigorous growth, allowing this charming plant to flourish in your enclosure.
