Coleus scutellarioides ‘Curly Coleus’ is a vibrant, eye-catching plant known for its deeply serrated, curly-edged leaves that come in a range of bold colors, including shades of red, pink, purple, green, and yellow. This fast-growing plant is excellent for bioactive setups, adding stunning foliage contrast to terrariums, vivariums, or paludariums. While commonly grown as an ornamental, it can also serve as a natural hiding spot for small reptiles and amphibians.

Care Instructions

LIGHT. Prefers bright, indirect light for the best color vibrancy. While it can tolerate partial shade, too little light may cause faded or dull colors. In bioactive setups, place it near a UVB or plant-specific LED light to maintain its striking hues. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage.

SOIL. Thrives in a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil mix. A blend of coconut coir, perlite, and organic compost works well, ensuring proper aeration and moisture retention. In bioactive enclosures, this type of substrate encourages healthy root growth and provides a balanced habitat for isopods and springtails.

WATERING. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. In bioactive setups, springtails and isopods will help break down excess moisture, maintaining a stable environment.

HUMIDITY. Prefers moderate to high humidity levels between 50-70%. While tolerant of lower humidity, the foliage thrives in consistent moisture. If housed in a bioactive setup, misting the enclosure lightly can help maintain optimal humidity without oversaturation.

TEMPERATURE. Best suited for warm conditions between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It is sensitive to cold, so avoid placing it near cold drafts, open windows, or AC vents.

FERTILIZATION. During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to encourage vigorous growth and maintain leaf vibrancy. In bioactive setups, organic options like Mealworm Frass provide slow-release nutrients for sustained health. Reduce feeding during winter when growth slows.

Cohabitation with Bioactive Organisms

ISOPODS. These decomposers aerate the soil and break down fallen leaves, preventing compaction and enhancing nutrient cycling. Isopods also contribute to soil health by feeding on decaying organic matter.

SPRINGTAILS. Excellent at managing mold, fungi, and decomposing plant material, springtails create a cleaner environment for Coleus ‘Curly Coleus’. Their presence helps prevent root rot and fungal infections in humid conditions.

Soil and Maintenance Tips

SUBSTRATE. A well-draining mix of coconut coir, perlite, and organic compost is ideal for root health. Adding a thin layer of activated charcoal at the bottom of the enclosure improves filtration and odor control.

HUMIDITY CONTROL. Maintain consistent humidity with a shallow water dish, misting, or natural moisture from a bioactive substrate. Springtails will help balance excess moisture, preventing fungal issues.

TRIMMING. Coleus ‘Curly Coleus’ grows rapidly, so regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages bushier, more compact growth. Cuttings can be easily propagated in water or soil, making it a great choice for expanding your collection.

PEST CONTROL. Naturally resistant to most pests, but keep an eye out for aphids, spider mites, or whiteflies in drier conditions. In a bioactive enclosure, springtails and isopods will help prevent pest infestations by consuming eggs and larvae.

With its bold, curly foliage and easy maintenance, Coleus scutellarioides ‘Curly Coleus’ is a striking addition to bioactive environments. It thrives alongside isopods and springtails, contributing to a balanced, self-sustaining ecosystem. By ensuring adequate light, humidity, and well-draining soil, you’ll support healthy, vibrant growth and a flourishing terrarium or vivarium.
